Waterloo Place SW1
14 October 1940
By John Winger
On 14 October 1940 at 10:23pm a German aircraft dropped a bomb on Waterloo Place SW1 and another just across the street at 10 Carlton House Terrace.
Thankfully, these bombs only left one casualty but damaged the buildings around them. At Waterloo Place the bomb damaged the road surface and the bronze and stone statue of Colin Campbell (British military hero of the Indian Mutiny, 1857). The bomb on Carlton Terrace caused a large gas main leak that required urgent attention from the rescue teams.
